About

Fine Art Photography From The Sea

Russell Ord is an Australian photographer whose work explores the dynamic relationship between people and the ocean. Working primarily from within the water, his images are shaped by proximity, patience, and lived experience — capturing both the raw power of heavy surf and the quieter, contemplative moments that exist between sets.

Raised around Rugby League and immersed in coastal life, Russell’s early years were defined by movement, competition, and service, including time spent as a firefighter. These experiences continue to inform his disciplined, calm approach to photographing unpredictable environments. Rather than observing from the shore, he enters the landscape he documents, allowing him to work at water level where light, motion, and risk intersect.

Taking photography seriously in the early 2000s, Russell quickly gained recognition for his immersive surf imagery and ocean studies. His work has been published internationally in titles including The Surfer’s Journal, Tracks, and Australian Surfing Life, and has received multiple awards for its composition and intensity. A defining chapter of his career was documenting the Western Australian reef break known as The Right, later featured in the documentary One Shot, which brought broader attention to heavy-water surfing and the culture surrounding it.

While best known for his ocean photography, Russell’s practice extends into documentary and cultural work, capturing authentic human experiences shaped by environment and community. His imagery reflects an ongoing investigation into rhythm, presence, and the relationship between landscape and identity.

Beyond his photographic practice, Russell collaborates with organisations such as the Surfrider Foundation and SurfAid, supporting environmental awareness and coastal communities. Together with his wife Catherine, he co-founded the Desert Light Foundation, a not-for-profit dedicated to mentoring and providing creative opportunities for young people facing geographic, financial, social, and health disadvantage.

Today, Russell continues to develop long-form projects, fine art editions, and custom-sized works for collectors and private clients. Based in Margaret River, Western Australia, his work remains shaped by the Ocean — a constant source of both challenge and inspiration.
